The training modules in this manual were designed to reinforce the knowledge and skills of middle-level health personnel in developing countries who supervise primary health personnel and refer problems to the district-level providers. Each module lists its specific learning objectives, describes the physiology of pathophysiology involved in acquiring the knowledge base to reach these objectives, and provides a list of skills to be acquired. The modules cover the following topics: conception and pregnancy, maternal care during delivery and the puerperium, care of the newborn at birth, resuscitation of the newborn, care of the newborn during the first week of life, breast feeding, weaning, birth spacing, immunization, growth monitoring, common ailments, outpatient clinics for children under five years old, family life education, and ways to assess health programs.
